Digital Citizenship

Digital citizenship is, basically, knowing how to act responsibly and appropriately online. I look at it as being the same as being a good citizen in everyday life. If you wouldn't say or do something in a normal setting, don't do it online. I like the definition that they use on the digital citizenship website, "Digital citizenship is the norms of appropriate, responsible technology use." In today's world where young children and exposed to so much technology and in most cases have devices of their own, it is so important for them to understand how to be good digital citizens and how they should act online. This is the idea of digital citizenship, and their hope is to educate children. They state that "digital citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare students/ technology users for a society full of technology." This is becoming a topic that is becoming more needed and more important for everyone to understand.
Now that we know the importance of digital citizenship, especially for young children the next question is how do we teach it. The main goal and idea behind teaching it is that we create a safe and positive online culture. A place where students can feel secure in sharing their ideas and projects and that they won't be bullied or made-fun of online. Commonsense.org has a wide variety of lessons to teach many different digital citizenship concepts. like privacy, cyber bullying, digital footprint, and many more. They have each of these broken down into sections and important steps and things for students to be aware of. The main thing, I feel, is that the students understand how to maneuver safely online and that whatever they post and say online will be there forever, there's no taking it back. If we can help them understand that and be more aware of what they do online, then they'll understand the rest easier and be safer and better digital citizens.
